WALK LEADERS' GUIDANCE PREPARING FOR LEADING

Download onto your phone the OS locate app, the “what three words” app these are useful to idenify where you are especially in an emergency.

The British Red Cross First aid app is useful should you need first aid advice.

Have a look at the, very useful, online training available on the Ramblers' website. There are three modules that are described as “mandatory” for walk leaders. These are “Walk Leadership Foundations”, Walk Leader Handbook” and “Prevening and Managing Incidents”.

Equipment – a basic first aid kit is useful and an emergency foil blanket – the group has some of these. Some spare clothing might be useful if your walk is in exposed terrain.

Planning the walk

All walks should be planned beforehand. Use maps, websites, guidebooks etc. to plan your route. If using Public Transport take into account bus/train 9mes.

Walk grade miles A 10+ Difficult / B 8+ Moderate / C 6+ Easy

Most walks should be recced beforehand and any risks such as road crossings, path condi9ons, ascents and descents, a loose style etc. noted so that you can refer to them on the walk. On the recce secateurs can be useful, we have two pairs for group use. Plan the locations for coffee and lunch stops. On the recce consider possible drop out points.

Start of the walk

Before setting off check the weather forecast – you may need to adjust the planned route if bad weather is forecast.

At the start of the walk inform the group of possible risks and points where walkers could drop out if necessary. Inform walkers of distance and rough estimate of finish time.

Remind walkers they should have emergency contact details in or on their rucksack key rings and ICE cards are available to all walkers. Any medical details would be helpful to NHS staff.

Mention if any toilets on route.

Count the number in the group, appoint a back marker if the group is large (10+). Leader and back marker should swap mobile numbers (but remember you may be in a location with poor mobile coverage). Do a quick check that walkers have suitable kit before leaving Nottingham and advise about conditions.

On the walk

Adjust the walking pace to allow the group to stay together and conversa9ons to take place. Maintain a position where you can observe if anyone is struggling
Do regular head counts to make sure all walkers are still with you.

Ask people not to walk ahead of you and ask them to inform back marker if stopping for any reason. Single file walking on roads, normally facing oncoming traffic.

Warn walkers about catching others with poles. Warn walkers about walking with umbrellas and point out difficulty of balancing when holding anything in one hand, there is also a danger of poking others with an umbrella.

In an emergency call 999, know where you are either grid reference (OS locate on phone) or 'what3words' and be able to explain what the problem is. Utilise the expertise in the group.

At the end of the walk check all walkers are okay and give directions to nearest bus stop if required.
