Getting there

By Bus: Coasthopper 1 (Sanders) runs hourly from Sheringham railway station towards Wells next the Sea, stopping in Salthouse after just 15 mins.

By car, take A149 along the coast.

Waypoints

1

From the bus stop in Salthouse, walk past Cross Street along the main road and turn right opposite Grouts Lane onto footpath towards marshes and sea.

2

Keep straight onto shingle beach (look out for yellow horned poppies). Turn left along top of bank (or along sand at low tide) with sea on right and walk for 1¼ miles. When rough grassy banks begin, follow path behind them. Continue beside bank of reeds to find path heading sharp left inland along embankment. Follow stony path inland through bird-rich marshes past a turf-roofed hide and several pools.

3

Reaching small car park, turn left beside main road for about 100 metres. Turn right at signpost with white Circular Walk arrow on bright blue background. These waymarks sign roughly the same route as this walk and are useful to help keep you on track. Follow path through bushes and straight along edge of field with hedge on right. Continue beside next two fields, passing Great Hulver Hill.

4

Turn left onto lane signed Sheringham. At start of clump of trees on left, turn diagonally left on signed footpath across small wooded heath. Cross straight over lane into narrow path through bracken. Go through gate and keep straight for about 20 metres, then turn left along defined grassy path. Reaching another gate, go through it and turn right. Look out for the brick remains of World War II radar station and a resident herd of goats. Follow track ahead to Bloomstile Lane.

5

Turn left along lane with great views ahead across Salthouse. Follow it left. Soon after wooden gate on left, turn diagonally right at footpath sign, through hedge and across field. On far side of field, climb down steps into Cross Street. Turn right along Cross Street, passing flint-walled cottages. Turn left at sign for church and follow drive. Walk through churchyard with church of St Nicholas (definitely worth a look) on right. Go through gap in wall beyond church onto wooded path, follow it down to Purdy Street and turn right to pub at end.

6

From Dun Cow, turn right past village green, shop and café along edge of main road back to bus stop.
