Waypoints

1

From the car park walk down to the sea and turn right along the shingle shore line. In a short distance, turn right and follow a path crossing the dunes towards a lighthouse on the horizon. This path eventually meets a cross path. Turn left and follow the path, parallel to the houses on the right, for about half a mile. Shortly before the last few houses on the ridge on the right follow a waymark to the right leading up steps. At the top of the steps take a narrow path onto a road. Turn right along the road and at the junction turn to the left. Follow the road to the junction with the B1159. Turn right along the road for 200 yards. Walk on the left side of the road around a dangerous narrow bend and take the path on the left through a stable yard. Keep on the path across fields for half a mile. At a T junction turn right and pass by High Barn Farm. Here the track becomes a road. Follow the road to the major road ahead. There are good views of Winterton church and the dunes to the right and the wind turbine on the left. This is the only remaining turbine from a small wind farm. The others were taken down at the end of their working life. At the main road turn left and almost immediately right into East Somerton. (A) At the beach of Winterton Dunes Nature Reserve, concrete tank-traps are a reminder of the importance of this coast in times of war. The dunes are an important Nature Reserve as one of the few remaining areas of acid dune heathland left in Europe. It supports bee orchids, natterjack toads, and Part of route blocked off

2

At Manor Farm, where the road turns right, take a concrete track to the left. On the corner are the remains of St Mary's Church. Pass the high brick wall of Burnley Hall on the left and take the right turn, still keeping to a concrete track. Follow the waymarks as the road turns left and then right. In half a mile, where the concrete road bears left, take the waymarked rough track to the right keeping a hedge to the left. Follow the track round to the left as far as Winterton Holmes. Turn right past some farm buildings and take the track, between hedges, for about half a mile to Winterton Ness.

3

At the information boards in the dunes take the grass path to the right. Follow the path through the dunes Nature Reserve for about a mile and a half. There are a number of ponds in this area, the homes for some of the rarer species of plants and animals unique to this habitat. The path leads to a cul-de-sac at the outskirts of Winterton. After a few houses on the left take a path on the left which crosses the dunes to return to the car park.
