Maryport Wellbeing Walkers will meet on alternate Wednesday mornings at 10.30 am outside the Lake District Coast Aquarium, South Quay, Maryport, CA15 8AB for easy walks in the harbour and promenade area with spectacular views across the Solway Firth to the Galloway Coast on clear days. Promenade walks are wheelchair accessible. Other walks may involve a few steps or short inclines. Walks range from 1 to 3 miles (1-1.5 hours), but can be shortened depending on the needs of the group, and the weather. The Promenade walk is suitable for all ages. Some free parking available near the Aquarium, otherwise Pay & Display on the South Quay (up to 2 hours £1.60, 4 hours £2.50). Public transport: Maryport railway station is approx. 1 mile from the Aquarium. The nearest bus stop is on Senhouse Street about 400 yards from the Aquarium. Toilets and refreshments are available at the aquarium. Wear comfortable flat shoes and clothing according to the weather. Walk leader Christine Slater, phone/text 07723016110 or email c.slater417@btinternet.com for more information or to register for the walk.
This walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs, and should be avoided after heavy rain, when paths in Crow Park might be muddy, but is lovely in the Spring after a dry spell, when the daffodils are flowering and there is blossom on the trees in the Memorial Gardens.
From the aquarium, we go up Shipping Brow and turn left into High St to Wood St, then down to Netherhall Corner. Explore the Memorial Gardens adjacent to St Mary’s Church before crossing the main road at the traffic lights. Walk through the main memorial gardens, stopping to explore the monuments, then along Ellenborough Rd to the gap in the wall just after the bridge over the river. Walk along the riverbank to the far end of the park, before returning through the trees to the entrance. Return to the aquarium via Wood Street and High St.
Wildlife interest. Look out for herons and kingfishers on the river.
