Starting where the canal passes through Tavistock Meadows the walk follows the towpath past Tavistock College, Crowndale Farm and away from the town, retracing our steps for the return. The canal was opened in 1817 to carry copper ore from the nearby mines to Morwellham for transportation to South Wales for smelting, but use stopped in 1880s after the opening of the railway.
This is a peaceful, scenic, level walk. Along the way look out for ducks and even a kingfisher if you are lucky!”
Be aware that paths may be muddy and uneven and conditions may change, so wear appropriate footwear and comfortable clothing. A walking stick is useful too. Also consider bringing a drink and snack, should you require it, especially on longer walks.
