Overview

Our coach ramble to Castleton is our second midweek venture and we are following the same format by offering three led walks.

For people who do not want to walk and just want a day out this is an opportunity for a relaxing visit to a pleasant and interesting place.

Castleton is a beautiful market town set in the heart of the Peak District and is known as the ”Gem of the Peaks”.  It has a spectacular location at the head of the Hope Valley surrounded by hills and natural features such as the dramatic landmark of Mam Tor.

Geologically, Castleton is on the boundary of gritstone (Dark Peak) and the southern limestone (White Peak) and has a dazzling array of natural and historic features both above and below ground.

Popular for its Show Caves, history, shops, Christmas Ceremony, Winnats Pass, Cave Dale, Castleton has a lot to offer visitors.

Peveril Castle sits on the hillside above the town and there are four show caves with guided tours, an ancient hill fort and many other interesting features in the immediate locality, such that today it is a tourist honeypot.

This area is renowned for its spectacular scenery and its many footpaths and tracks attracting large numbers of ramblers who year-round flock to this area from far and wide.
