The Hertfordshire 'Bottoms' are valleys of clear, slow-flowing freshwater streams and their hinterlands. There are some 40 significant 'Bottoms' in Hertfordshire.
The River Mimram rises at Whitwell from a spring which feeds watercress beds that have existed since Roman times. The valley extends northwards where it becomes known as Lilley Bottom, and other sections of the valley are known as Codicote Bottom, Whiteway Bottom, Claggy Bottom and Kimpton Bottom. These Mimram Bottoms are miles apart and are accessible via many ascents and descents.
This full day circular walk, with an optional pub stop half way through, will allow us to visit all five of them. It is not intended to be a "route march" but rather a moderately paced exploration of this rural area. We will pause frequently to admire the views. Please bring a packed lunch as there will be no chance to obtain provisions en route.
At the end of the walk will be the opportunity for a drink at The Cross Keys, an archetypal Hertfordshire country pub.
Starting point of the walk: meet outside The Cross Keys, Ballslough Lane, Gustard Wood, AL4 8LA. Please park considerately alongside the lane rather than in the pub car park.
