A linear walk in the area where D. H. Lawrence spent his formative years, refering to it as 'the country of my heart'! Many of the places we pass were inspirational for the settings used in his books and short stories.
After alighting the Rainbow 1 bus (toilets) we immediately walk past the D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum, then walk on to Colliers Wood, the site of the old Moorgreen Colliery (Minton Pit in Sons & Lovers).
From here onwards to Moorgreen Reservoir (Willey Water in Women in Love and Nethermere in Sons & Lovers - the drowning scene was actually based on fact!)
Then onto Felley Mill (Strelley Mill in The White Peacock). After a couple of miles we see in the distance the remains of Beauvale Priory, founded in 1343 by Carthusian monks and inspiration for Lawrence in A Fragment of Stained Glass.
Onwards again to Gresley Church (Minton in Sons & Lovers).
Leaving Gresley Church we walk for approximately 2 miles to Giltbrook for the next avaialble Rainbow 1 bus back to Nottingham (every 10 minutes).
