(Estimated finish time: 15:30)
Leisurely 10 miles / 16.1 km
The walk starts from the famous and recently restored and repainted Iron Bridge, opened in 1781 and the first arch bridge made from cast iron. The bridge and the Ironbridge Gorge form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From the bridge, we climb to a good viewpoint looking back to the bridge and gorge. We then follow some of the Shropshire Way south-west along Benthall Edge and through farmland and woodland to the medieval market town of Much Wenlock. (Wenlock is from the Celtic name, Wininicas, meaning 'white' and presumably referring to the limestone of the area rather than any pasty-faced residents!)
We return at a lower level, near Gleedon Hill and Brook's Hill, to pass the power station and reach the start back on the River Severn.
