A lovely and varied walk in this beautiful corner of the Midlands. We explore a quiet part of the Wyre Forest before heading down the River Severn to the popular Georgian town of Bewdley then return to the start point through forested valleys. The Wyre Forest covers an area of some 10 square miles and is noted for its abundant wildlife. It is one of the largest remaining ancient woodlands in the UK.
From the start point we walk through Seckley Wood to an impressive viewpoint, high above Trimpley reservoir. From here, you can watch the River Severn meander below through a steep wooded valley towards the villages of Arley and Highley. You also get a good view of the steam trains making their way along the heritage Severn Valley railway between Bewdley and Bridgnorth.
We then make our down to the River Severn and walk along the bank to Bewdley where we will have our lunch break. There will be ample opportunity to explore the town and sample its pubs or cafes if you want. There is also a very interesting museum and craft centre to visit.
Suitably refreshed, we will head back into the Forest and follow a deep valley to Dowles Brook and the national Trust property Knowles Mill. This is one of six mills that operated along the Brook in the past. After taking a look at this fascinating building, we will return to the start point at Hawkbatch.
