Start time: 10:00
(Estimated finish time: 12:30)
Leisurely 5.5 miles / 8.8 km
NOTE – THIS CAN BE TACKED ON TO THE SECOND WALK SCHEDULED IN THE AFTERNOON,
FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO – See ‘Butterfly Walk 2’ for details
This is intended as a preceding walk for those of us unable to live with themselves unless they walk double- figure mileage! We leave the historic village of Downton, following the Avon Valley Path north along substantially flat river stretches before climbing out of the valley, so there is some modest uphill to negotiate. You will also encounter history by passing very close to Trafalgar House, so-named after being given to the family of the heroic Admiral Nelson! Lunch stop is at the end of the walk, arriving back at the Moot, an unusual earthwork in Downton.
Those of you content with Walk 1 only could drive down (5 mins) to The Bull and sort out a Sunday carvery as your reward! Walk number two is planned to follow, having allowed us at least 30 minutes’ break.
Meet Point: Moot Car Park (free at last check) at The Moot, Downton
Grid reference: SU181213
Nearest postcode: SP5 3QD
Start time: 10:00
This is a circular walk
What you need to consider:
Bring packed lunch for end of walk (unless you are making own arrangements) – there are only brief drink/snack stops
Toilet visit - there are no facilities en route (apart from the odd hedge, if that works for you) but there are public toilets in Downton after the walk.
Good walking boots/shoes – should be dry this time of year but check the forecast and be prepared for anything!
Bring enough drink for the walk
Dogs – assistance dogs only please
