The Victorian Dams of Elan Valley

Group Dorset 4050 Walkers

Follow bridge St in a downwards direction to edge of town, then turn right onto the old Aberystwyth mountain road, after 1km turn right at cottages turn left onto open moor land, follow track uphill to Esgair Ddrew bearing left towards sheepfold and roman camp, follow track onto Esgair Perfedd and onwards towards top dam of Craig Goch reservoir, (some amazing views),

Picking up the top point of the old railway track, this served the workers with materials and transport for building of the dams,

We follow this for 3-4 km in a slight down hill direction to meet the next dam at Penygarreg, at Penbont house (tea room) from here follow footpath around edge of Grrege-Ddu reservoir to Nantgwylit church, here we cross dam bridge to pick up old railway walk and following edge of  Caban-Coch reservoir into Elan Visitor centre and the village of Elan,

Follow old disused railway back into Rhayader.
