Walk Description:
The walk starts at Bulbarrow Hill high on the Wessex Ridgeway path. After a short distance on country lanes we take the footpath down through the woods then along Heath Bottom. Look out for the coppiced hazel trees and the deserted trailers that presumable once carried the harvested timber. Also spot the buzzards overhead and the wild ponies in this beautiful valley. We turn right and climb up past a group of tumuli then into woodland and fields and on to Milton Abbas. Passing through the village we follow old tracks to the 12th Century (but much restored) St Catherine’s Chapel hidden in the woods. This might make a good lunch stop with its fine view of the ancient Milton Abbey (now a posh school). Skirting the Abbey to the North we walk through fields (dodging cow pats) to the village of Hilton. The path takes a low level route directly North along Hilton Bottom and the tops of the Bulbarrow radio masts peep over the horizon. Finally a steepish climb takes us up to the masts and back to our start point. For those with energy left Rawlsbury Camp hill fort is only a mile away but let the walk leader know if you want to visit.
