SUB GROUP - INVERNESS YOUNG WALKERS (IYW)
Britain's sixth-highest mountain might not seem like the obvious choice if you're new to hillwalking but an elevated start point at the ski centre car park gives you a real height advantage and the well-maintained paths can give you confidence under-foot, making this a walk that anyone with a fair level of fitness and a wee bit of determination can manage.
Weather-depending, we'll take one of two routes:
1) Approx 8 miles and 2,500ft of ascent. This is our primary goal: Cairn Gorm via the Northern Corries. This is a spectacular walk that sees us walk in front of the spectacular corries of Coire an t-Sneachda and Coire an Lochain before climbing around behind them up on to the Cairngorm Plateau, eventually climbing the flank of Cairn Gorm itself. From there we'll admire the far-reaching views across both Speyside and Deeside, then descend behind the Ptarmigan restaurant and onwards back to the base station car park.
2) Approx 4 miles and 2,000ft of ascent. This is our 'Plan B'. The Cairngorm Plateau is not to be trifled with and in the event of mediocre weather we'll take the safer option and climb Cairn Gorm directly without crossing the plateau. This shorter, steeper route uses the same descent path but climbs directly up and out of Coire Cas via the Fiacaill a' Choire Chas.
Given the height of Cairn Gorm, over 4,000ft, if the weather is poor we'll have to play it safe and postpone. Any postponement will be based on the walk leader's experience of the plateau and weather forecasts from the Mountain Weather Information Service between 24 and 48 hours of the walk.
