Start time: 10:00
(Estimated finish time: 15:15)
Moderate 9 miles / 14.5 km
The walk commences at the Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park and follows the Ashby-de-la-Zouch canal, leaving it to pass through Donisthorpe Woodland Park until it meets the Ivanhoe Trail. This section was one of the many mainly freight lines in the area at the time when coal was king. We leave this line to cross to Oakthorpe, then North-East to enter Willesley Wood by Saltersford Brook. After passing the Royal British Legion Memorial we cross towards Willesley Lake and ascend to the isolated church of St Thomas. We skirt Willesley Golf Course before descending to White Lodge, then taking the winding paths through Shellbrook Woods to emerge at Hinks Lodge. After making a circuit of the lake we return to Moira Furnace along another short stretch of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch canal.
