(Estimated finish time: 15:00)
Moderate 12 miles / 19.3 km
Rachel A and Alex Neely are leading a 12 mile moderate walk with some hills (poles might be advisable for some of the short hills, especially if it is wet under foot).
This figure of eight walk starts in Cleobury Mortimer, where Simon Evans, the local Postman, writer and broadcaster, lived. We will follow some of the route where he walked to deliver the post and pondered about his writing material.
Simon Evans was born in Wales in 1895 but he moved to this area to repair his damaged lungs sustained when gassed during WW1. He was so inspired by the beautiful countryside that he wrote 5 books about South Shropshire.
Following the footsteps of this famous postman, along the Rea Valley, we walk North passing Detton Hall, Prescott, Oreton and return via Neen Savage and finish back in Cleobury Mortimer passing the house Simon had built in 1938 when he married his wife, ‘Aunty Doris’, a children’s radio performer. Alas, Simon died 2 years later on 9th August 1940, one day before his 45th birthday!
Please bring your own lunch and refreshments. Note there are no toilets during the walk but there are some in the car park where we meet and start the walk.
Once back in Cleobury Mortimer there will be an optional pub stop.
Please arrive at 10:00 for a 10:15 start.
