Start time: 10:00
(Estimated finish time: 15:00)
Moderate 9.5 miles / 15.3 km
This walk is limited to 20 people including the leader.
A varied walk from Biggleswade to the RSPB nature reserve at Sandy.
The walk will begin with a short stretch through Biggleswade's historic centre. We will first head from the train station towards an old mill by the Ivel, then follow the river for half a mile north. Then, back into town for a bit towards Shortmead House, a Georgian manor from the late 18th century. We'll go through Biggleswade Common, then cross under the rail line and head through fields, passing through Furzenhall Farm before reaching a lovely patch of woodland which should still have some late autumn colour.
Shortly after, we'll enter the RSPB's Sandy estate, where we walk through Sandy Heath and then up to the headquarters of the RSPB. Nearby there's a lush grass field which should be perfect for our packed lunch break.
We will then walk through some of the woodland of the estate and back down into town, briefly walking through Biggleswade's new building estate. On the way to the station there's a craft beer shop & tasting room ideal for a well deserved thirst-quenching drink to finish.
Booking your place: This walk has a limited capacity. If you would like to join, you MUST book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place. Please DO NOT turn up for a walk without booking, as we will have to turn you away. Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk, or to share if requested with NHS Test and Trace.
