Leisurely 5.5 miles / 8.8 km
A level walk starting at the historic Rye House Gatehouse, head south along the river Lea towpath to the lock where we cross to meet the River Stort. We follow the towpath to Roydon where we leave the river for a short walk along the road. We pick up the footpath through to Stanstead Abbotts and follow the path around the lakes. We return via Rye Meads with a chance to stop for some birdwatching or just take in the scenery, possibly a chance to visit one of the Hides. After the walk there will be chance to visit the Rye House pub (where The Great Bed of Ware was once housed) for a drink and/or food.
Meet at the Gatehouse Car Park (free) and then we start the walk from the Gatehouse itself.
This is a circular walk
