Start time: 10:30
(Estimated finish time: 12:00)
Leisurely 3 miles / 4.8 km
The first of two short walks today hosted by Stag Walkers as part of Ickleford’s Jubilee Bank Holiday celebrations. Join us for one walk or both! Both walks start and finish at Lower Green in the north-east of the village.
Our morning walk is to Wilbury Hill and Cadwell Farm. We’ll begin by heading south through the meadows by the River Hiz, to reach the old railway embankment once used for the former Hitchin - Bedford line. Here we turn onto the Icknield Way, the ancient trackway which passes through Ickleford on its route from Buckinghamshire to Suffolk. We’ll follow the Icknield Way over the steps of the railway bridge at Cadwell Crossing and up the gentle slope of Wilbury Hill as far as the edge of Letchworth. Turning to the west, we should have a good view of the surrounding countryside as we walk downhill past the lavender fields at Cadwell (worth returning to when in flower!). Finally we pass through horse paddocks and under the Arlesey Road railway bridge to return to our start point at Lower Green.
At Lower Green we’ll have an early picnic lunch (bring a packed lunch and something to sit on) with the option for a quick drink at The Cricketers (5 minutes walk along Arlesey Road) before meeting for our afternoon walk at 12.30.
Booking is not essential for this walk but we do find it helpful to know who’s coming, so:
* if you plan to come along please book a place for yourself and any guests you are bringing
* if you have to cancel please update your RSVP so we know not to wait for you
* you can RSVP via our Meetup group or email stagwalkers at gmail dot com
Starting point
Lower Green, Ickleford, Hitchin SG5 3TW. If driving to the walk, please park considerately on Snailswell Lane, SG5 3TP.
Please car-share if possible. Alternatively, take Stagecoach bus 9A which runs between Hitchin and Bedford and stops at Lower Green. Please note the walks start from Lower Green - if travelling from the Hitchin direction, Lower Green is at the far end of the village and should not be confused with Upper Green (which is next to the church and school).
