Walk for the Public: Tipton (BOOKING ESSENTIAL)
Saturday, 2 July 2022
Start time: 10:30
Easy 4 miles / 6.4 km
This is a flat 4-mile circular walk around Tipton, with good surfaces along canal towpaths, tarmac paths in Victoria Park and short sections on streets. The walk includes both BCN Main Line Canals - James Brindley's original canal, completed in 1772, and Thomas Telford's 'new' canal. The canal company appointed Telford to shorten Brindley's old main line and between 1825 and 1838 he engineered a new line using massive cuttings and embankments to maintain a continuous level. These improvements not only increased the amount of available waterway but also considerably shortened the route from Birmingham to Wolverhampton. There will be a stop midway at the Gongoozler Coffee Shop, an attractive venue run by the Dudley Canal Trust with outdoor seating for anyone not wishing to purchase food. Note: A gongoozler is a person who enjoys watching activity on the canals. The term is also used more generally to describe those who have an interest in canals and canal life, but do not actively participate. Near the end of the walk there is a second stop with the option of a drink at the Fountain Inn, a traditional real ale pub with a lot of history going back to the 1800s. The Fountain was the headquarters of William Perry, 'The Tipton Slasher', champion prize-fighter of England 1850-1857. The walk continues to the point where the two canals join before ending back at Tipton station. . At the end of the walk The Fountain Inn is a traditional real ale pub in Tipton, providing locals and passing guests with a warm, cosy and welcoming pub. The pub has a lot of history behind it that goes back to the 1800’s. For example, the famous Tipton slasher used to train at the Fountain.
Meet on the platform at Birmingham New Street for the 10.40 am train to Wolverhampton, usually 3B but check on the day. We alight at Tipton station. The train journey is free for West Midlands Travel Pass holders. Return trains are at 30 and 56 minutes past the hour.
