Strenuous 9.5 miles / 15.3 km
Situated somewhat apart from the other major peaks of Snowdonia, the 2800 feet Arenig Fawr dominates the surrounding moorland. The paths, though steep in places, make for a relatively easy ascent, aided by the fact that the starting point is already at 1100 feet! Our route leaves a quiet lane to follow a stony track up to Llyn Arenig Fawr, lying beneath the impressive crags of the mountain. A path climbs steeply up beside the crags, soon leaving the lake far below. A steady climb across grass and boulders leads to the ridge and thence to the summit cairn and trig point, with extensive views in all directions. There is also a memorial here to the crewmen of a US B17 bomber which crashed on the summit in 1943. Following the south ridge, we descend steeply to pick up an easy track which heads back along a remote valley, passing the ruins of old farmhouses before joining the lane where a short walk brings us back to the start.
