Strenuous 10 miles / 16.1 km
Lying just to the north of Llanelltyd, Y Garn is a comparatively little-known mountain. Though part of the Rhinog range it is somewhat out on a limb from the main ridge and is often overlooked by hill-walkers. This walk visits both Y Garn itself and the lesser top of Garn Fach. A moderate climb through woodland and over the rough, grassy hillside brings us to Cefn Coch, high above the village of Ganllwyd. We continue the ascent, soon reaching the 629 metre summit of Y Garn. Here we are treated to magnificent 360 degree views, including the Rhinogs and Cadair Idris. After a short, rocky descent, faint paths lead us across a rough plateau to Garn Fach, with views across Cwm Mynach to the Rhinogydd and the Mawddach Estuary. Heading down into the valley, we follow footpaths and a quiet lane to join the New Precipice Walk, from where we head back down to our start in Llanelltyd.
