Many visitors to the Rhinogydd head for the famous Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach, little realising that these are not the highest tops in the range. This honour goes to Y Llethr at 756 metres and the neighbouring Diffwys, 750 metres, both of which will be visited on today’s long and strenuous mountain walk. Starting from Cors y Gedol, we follow old tracks climbing gradually into the hills. After crossing over the ancient packhorse bridge of Pont Scethin, we take a steeper track climbing up on to the ridge and then turn east towards Diffwys. As we follow the grassy ridge, we can expect wonderful panoramic views of the Mawddach Estuary, the ridges of Cadair Idris and the Rhinogydd themselves. From Diffwys, a brief, descent brings us to an easy path along the rocky ridge of Crib-y-Rhiw. Beyond, it is just a short climb over grass to the summit of Y Llethr. Returning by the same route, we continue our descent towards the coast, eventually dropping down to re-join the tracks in the valley.
