Start time: 10:00
Moderate 8 miles / 12.9 km
A coastal walk around the coastline near Bempton Cliffs, one of the most important loacations for nesting seabirds in the UK.
The walk offers 2 lengths. The full length is just short of 8 miles and the shorter version, 5 ½ miles.
Pit stops: The RSPB centre offers facilities at the 3 mile stage and is also the place to break off to take the 5 ½ mile route back to the cars. Other pit stops include the Gallery Tea Rooms on Buckton main street and then The White Horse pub in the centre of Bempton about ¾ mile further along that same road.
The White Horse does not require tables to be booked and advises that the menu is a little limited with it being a Sunday and the traditional Sunday lunch being the main dish of the day. The Sunday menu can be viewed on The White Horse Pub Facebook page. The pub also advised that if a number of walkers pre ordered then things might be speeded up but it’s not essential. At the beginning of the walk, you will be asked if you wish to eat at the pub (optional) and if so tables will be booked to time with our expected arrival time
I would say that the walk is easy to moderate with only slight gradients to deal with. The pub is 1 ½ miles short of the end point or 6 ¼ miles into the walk and so, at 2 ½ miles per hour, we should be at the pub between 12.30 and 1.00pm.
Those who took the shorter route and who want a pub lunch will arrive first with their cars and, in the past, there has been a bit of a taxi service for anyone not fancying the last stretch which, if the most direct route is taken, is largely on a busy road.
Starting point
Start at 10.00am from Metlands Grain Store, near Bempton, a double gate entrance some 300m on the RHS of Stonepit Lane (sadly, not signposted but identified by a Wandale Farm sign) off the Bempton to Flamborough road in a dip some ½ mile from Bempton. Post Code YO15 1JG
