Overview

This is a circular walk covering an area from Newtown to Burghclere, and passes through Brocks Green to the east. There are some great viewpoints along the route and there’s a wide variety of terrain: plenty of wooded areas, farmland and country lanes – with a few sections on quiet roads. There are 4 stiles, and several inclines - but none are onerous. But it would be worthwhile to bring poles if you use them.

The morning walk is just over 5 miles which will be followed by a lunch stop at the Carpenters in Burghclere. A shorter walk of just over 3 miles will take place in the afternoon. The pub needs food orders in advance, so please send me your choices by midday on Tuesday latest. The menu will be sent to you once you have registered. There are places nearby to have a picnic if that's your preference.

If the weather is sunny, please remember hats and/or suncream. There are no facilities on route, but plenty of tree cover. Please bring plenty to drink.

This walk is not suitable for dogs.

We meet at Jonathan Hill car park on Well St, Newtown (RG20 9AT). If you come from the South, leave the A34 at the first Newbury exit on to the B4640 towards Newbury. Take the right immediately after The Swan pub and the car park is about half a mile on your left (by a post box). Car sharing would help if you are able, to help ensure there is enough parking space. Please either arrange directly or let me know your location and I will try to connect people together.
