Walking the upper half of the iconic Itchen Way, from the Cathedral at Winchester to the river source Cheriton. This walk along a world class chalk river makes for a wonderful day out, packed with natural and historic interest.
This is the second of two walks, the first from the river's mouth up to Winchester on Monday 4 August, allowing for a complete walk of the Itchen Way.
This will be a linear walk, aiming to catch the 4.15pm #67 bus back from Cheriton to Winchester (changing at Alresford for the #64)
Shorter routes are available if you catch the #67 bus back from Itchen Abbas (6 miles) or #64 / #67 near Alresford (9 miles).
There are very limited facilities along the way, so you will need to bring your own water, a flask, snacks and a packed lunch. There are no public toilets, but we will be passing a couple of pubs around the half way point which may let you use their facilities. There is also a pub at the end of the walk, near the bus stop.
Note - we will follow the more attractive St James' Way / St Swithun's Way to Easton, which runs parallel to the Itchen Way. This is due to a temporary closure of part of the Itchen Way due to bridge works.
