Overview

A walk around the headwaters of the River Churn just south of Seven Springs to include the opportunity to visit the remarkable church at Elkstone.  As we cross the Churn valley and enjoy views from the higher ground on either side there will inevitably be a number of ascents and descents.

Starting in Coberley we will go east across the Churn valley to Upper Coberley and hopefully enjoy good views as we then gradually descend to Cockleford. After crossing the river again we will encounter a couple of secluded valleys and gently climb to Elkstone for an extended picnic lunch break.

There will be time to explore the Norman church (Simon Jenkins has given it three stars) - notably its chancel (unaltered since the 12th century), a corbel table (described as a 'gallery of faces'), a rare columbarium over the chancel and a richly carved Norman tympanum.

From Elkstone we head north, descending to Cowley and follow the Churn valley back to Coberley
