This varied walk takes us through rural, industrial, and residential landscapes. Starting from All Saints Church we join the towpath of the Trent and Mersey Canal. The ‘Quarter Mile Bridge’ takes us over the River Trent at its junction with the canal. Our morning break will be at Wychnor Church, one of the few remains of a medieval village. We return to the canal, cross the A38 on a road bridge, then follow Catholme Lane, a rough track that could be muddy. This leads us south between the railway line and the lakes created by the activities of the working Barton Quarry. After crossing the Trent again on a footbridge, we reach the National Memorial Arboretum where we will pause for our picnic lunch. We will follow the well laid out paths and gardens, viewing several forces memorials, before reaching the Visitor Centre. Here we will have a break of about half an hour so that walkers can have a drink in the café, view the exhibitions or explore further memorials at their leisure. Our return route involves some road walking, crossing the busy A38 and following a quiet footpath known as Dark Lane. There is one stile than we cross twice.
We need to cross the busy and fast A38 at a designated pedestrian crossing without the benefit of traffic lights. Please take great care, be patient and wait for a suitable gap in the traffic. THERE IS NO RUSH.
