Walk Description

Please be aware that we are reputed to walk at a brisker pace than other groups, so it’s important to have a reasonable level of fitness. This is a walk with testing terrain and distance if not your usual habit. Please contact the walk leader if you have any concerns

For those keen to know the stile count (maybe it's a bit like knowing the ABV of the wine you're guzzling) they are prolific: I sadly lost track at 20+.

If you can get over this, we're exploring the stream-rich vales of Dorset’s dairy farming area, beginning in the pretty village of Askerswell, climbing gently to similarly quaint Nettlecombe then further to the iron-age banks and ditches of Eggardon Hill at 250 metres. After a short snack break to take in the lovely views south to the sea, we head north and east in a circular route across fields and woodland, negotiating the ups and downs of several grassy valleys and waterways close to the villages of Toller Porcorum and Wynford Eagle, before returning to our start point on solid paths.

Due to the multiple streams (including the occasional leap across) that run through this area, some parts remain wet and muddy all year round, but it makes for interesting and characterful terrain. Full-ankle walking boots are highly recommended.

Additional guidance to reach meet point:

Postcode is approximate. Use Whatthreewords or type ‘Askerswell Village Hall’ into Google Maps, though it’s also signposted in the village. Park sensibly in the good-sized car park at the hall. We’ve hired it for the day so kindly bring a few coins to make a small contribution.
