Join us for a refreshing 7 mile winter walk that embraces the quiet beauty of January, when bare branches open up wide views and big skies steal the show. Make sure you wrap up as it could be a cold walk (also possbily muddy in the woods so wear sensible footwear).
We’ll start from Theale Train Station, easing our way through the town before heading out towards the impressive Englefield Estate. With luck, the winter stillness may reward us with a glimpse of the estate’s resident deer, often easier to spot at this time of year among the leafless trees.
From here, the route takes us towards the tiny hamlet of North Street, before tackling the rather less tranquil (but mercifully brief!) crossing over the M4 motorway — a reminder that peace and quiet are never too far away.
We’ll pause somewhere scenic along the way to enjoy our packed lunches, taking in the open countryside and winter air before setting off again.
After lunch, the walk climbs gently into Boxgrove Wood, where the lack of leaves allows us to appreciate the shape and structure of the woodland in its winter form. We’ll pass Wilders Folly, an excellent spot for photos and a short breather.
The final stretch brings us past Ikea (sadly no meatball stop planned!) before looping back into Theale, where there will be an optional pub stop to warm up, reflect on the walk, and celebrate seven well-earned winter miles.
A great walk for blowing away the January cobwebs — wrap up warm, bring your lunch, and enjoy a classic winter ramble with good company.
