Overview

A great way to start 2024 with this moderate walk incorporating the best bits of the Sandstone Trail. This is a stunning walk through ancient woodland and along farm tracks with far reaching views across the Cheshire Plains. There are a few short ascents but nothing too strenuous.

Starting from the Bickerton Hill Car Park, NT Car Park, we will follow the Sandstone Trail along the ridge and edges as far as Peckforton Lodge house. We will complete our circuit by taking a lower route beneath the ridge, passing through Harthill and Brown Knowl villages before climbing up to the 3000 year old hill fort known as Maiden Castle whose circular ramparts can still be seen today.
