A chance to visit the north east of Dartmoor starting at Moretonhampstead. Parking in Court Street car park (£4.50 for all day so look to car share). From there we walk past the George Parker Bidder monument, through St Andrew’s church yard, past the playpark and on to the footpaths through Steward Wood and Pepperdon Farm. We walk past Blackenstone Quarry before climbing Blackingstone Rock where we will take tea/coffee using the picnic table.
Blackingstone Rock is a large tor with characteristic granite jointing. There are stairs and a handrail for the final ascent to the top of the rock.
After tea break we head to Westcott through the lanes, footpaths and woods before a challenging climb up to Mardon Down where we stop for lunch at the Headless Cross.
After lunch we continue in past the Giant’s Grave before returning via a series of footpaths.
This is a strenuous 10.5 mile walk with 2000ft of ascents, one of them quite challenging. There is one stile, several gates and a tricky stream to cross.
the car park has free toilets.
Start time 0930. Finish 1530 - 1600 ish.
