Did you know that a huge part of the London Borough of Bromley is rural? Well, this walk utilises that, and after a couple of miles the route completely leaves behind leafy suburbia and it's all woodland, rolling hills and sleepy villages (where I am sure a lot of the residents still like to claim they live in Kent!) and up until the last few miles, it all takes place within greater London before then crossing the border into Kent and descending down the North Downs ridge into Sevenoaks. The 'Downs' themselves are very much just rolling hills, and the walk's total ascent is just over 500 metres.
Bring a packed lunch. The lunch stop itself will be 10.5 miles into the walk on the village green at the wonderfully named village of Pratts Bottom, there is also a pub there for drinks only. Plenty of of pubs and restaurants to choose from in Sevenoaks town centre at the end.
OPTIONAL DROP OUT POINT: Though the walk will be at a brisk pace, for anyone who does not fancy the entire distance, Knockholt Railway Station (within London fare zone and direct trains to London Bridge / Charing Cross) is just under a mile away along a footpath at around 11.5 miles into the walk.
Travel: Take 09:45 from London Charing Cross (Waterloo East 09:48, London Bridge 09:54) arrive at Orpington at 10:10.
For those starting from outside London, buy a return to Sevenoaks. For those starting their journey from within a London Fare Zone, as Orpington station is within the fare zone, it may be cheaper to tap in and out in the morning, and then buy a single back from Sevenoaks.
IMPORTANT - meet at the entrance by platforms 1 and 2 on the western side of the station.
