The walk begins from Byrness village, following the Pennine Way for a short time, then turning right into the Cottonshopeburn valley to follow the ordinance road up to Cottonshope Farm. We then head left for a steepening, grassy section up to the top of Ravens Pike and lunch with maginificent views in all directions. The descent follows the Pennine Way over Hough Hill. There are a couple of steep and rocky sections where care is needed, but there is no risk.
The walk is varied and includes fairly level forestry tracks and roads, a metalled ordinance road and fairly steep moorland tracks. There is an extensive section on the Pennine Way over flagstones, and there may be boggy areas after rain.
Grade: Moderate/strenuous (because of steep sections).
Lunch stop on the walk, refreshments at the last cafe in England on the way home for those who would like them (closes at 4pm)
