The National Memorial Arboretum, for those who have not been, is a most impressive and thought provoking place to visit. You will not forget it and will want to go again. The site is big enough in its own right just to visit, to see and appreciate the many memorials, with enough space to make up your own walks whilst you are there – and to remember how much we all owe to those who didn’t come back.
We start the walk from The Crown Inn in the village of Alrewas. The route takes us along the Trent and Mersey canal to the Hamlet of Wychnor. We then follow a pleasant bridle/cycle path which eventually joins a small lane that takes us back over the canal. We then have a short walk along a road before dropping down to a path which goes between gravel pits and a train line. We pass the River Trent where it splits to form the River Tame, which flows beside the National Memorial Arboretum, we enter at the North Eastern end. The Arboretum has over 400 memorials, the path around is approx. 2 miles, there are many offshoots and you can explore at leisure. The visitor centre and café is open until 5pm, but you can stay in the park longer. We will regroup and walk back into Alrewas for post walk drinks at The Crown Inn
