From the Carpark a very steep climb to The top of Carrock Fell. Carrock Fell is made up of many different rocks but gabbro is rare in Cumbria, Britain and globally.
Gabbro started as an iron and magnesium rich molten rock which was injected into older rocks 460 million years ago. Gabbro is hard and was used in the Neolithic tools.
At the top of the fell there is an Iron Age Hill Fort with ramparts up to 1.6 m high in places. Descending Carrock Fell we cross High Pike and Low Pike before turning east and skirting the edge of the fell till reaching the track and the finally the car park.
