One of Jane Austen’s letters to sister Cassandra when she lived in Chawton detailed a walk to drink tea in Faringdon and this walk will do just this minus the tea drinking, unless you bring a flask! Our route South to Faringdon leaves the village from near the cottage where Jane lived for her most successful literary years in her lifetime. We pass the grand Chawton House and head through parkland and fields with our return from Faringdon being largely along a disused railway.
This walk is free and is in conjunction with the Beyond the Bonnets: Working Women in Jane Austen’s Novels at The ARC, Winchester from 26 July to 2 November 2025 and the walk needs to be booked on the ARC’s web site, arcwinchester.org.uk. Bring the necessary clothing for an English evening and the footwear for a country walk. Some water and maybe a snack in case is advised.
Meet at the green area opposite Jane Austen’s House Museum. CP nearby and also parking along the road and down to Chawton House (which is a different place to Jane Austen’s House Museum.
