A beautiful, easygoing walk from Chichester on the original Centurion Way to the start of the New Centurion Way and onwards, including the recently added section from West Dean to Singleton. The route follows the old dismantled Chichester to Midhurst railway line, which closed in 1991. The walk is mainly flat and passes by various works of art along the way, including the Chichester Road Gang created by Cornish sculptor David Kemp, using empty oxygen gas cylinders, and they include a ganger with a bowler hat, workers with spades and a surveyor with a theodolite. Beyond West Dean, the New Centurion way goes through West Dean Halt (a railway request stop), West Dean Chalk Stone Halt, Hat Hill Bridge Halt, Milk Halt and beyond to Singleton Station. A gradual descent brings the walk down to Singleton village where we will catch the Stagecoach 60 to Chichester, as the walk is linear so please bring your bus pass or £3 for the bus.
Toilet facilities at start of walk and at optional cafe stop for lunch at West Dean Stores & Tearoom. The cafe prices and food are very good.
Bring a picnic, if not using the cafe, and a mid-morning snack.
Information boards on the (New) Centurion Way detail the history of the railway and provide information about local amenities so the walk will be at a pace to allow ramblers to take time to read these boards. The walk is linear from Chichester Train Station to Singleton Village so please bring your bus pass or £3 for the bus back to the start. There are a lot of cows in one field near the end of the walk. The paths are mainly on hard surfaces, but there could be a muddy section near the field of cows.
Hopefully the Autumn colours will be on full show on the trees and hedges along the way.
The walk finish time is for Singleton, not Chichester Railway Station, as it is dependent on the bus times. The 60 bus runs every half hour and the journey time is 24 minutes.
No dogs.
