Overview

Join this friendly group for an 11-mile circular route from Fordham, taking in woodland, river and open countryside.  We will pass through Hillhouse Wood and follow part of the Essex Way along the River Colne en route to our lunch stop in Great Tey. We will return via Penlan Hall and finish in the now well-established woodland to the west of Fordham. There will be some fine views over the Colne valley along the way.

The route is gently undulating and the going is generally good, though some parts will be muddy after significant rain. Walking boots are recommended. The group maintains a steady pace, but will stop for breaks, including a longer pause for lunch in Great Tey. Here we will utilise benches in the churchyard, and there's a pub (The Chequers) next door for those who want it. Bring you own food and drink and be prepared for all weather eventualities.

The only toilets on the route are customer loos at the pub (6.75 miles). There are, however, many suitable opportunities in nature along the way.

Walkers' carpark off Ponders Road. Go under height barrier and beware potholes! There should be plenty of room for car parking here but, if not, it shouldn't be difficult to find a space in nearby residential roads.
