We will meet at Whitby Abbey and car shuttle back to begin the walk at Ravenscar with fabulous views down the coast. The walk starts along the Cleveland Way via the old alum works before reaching the clifftops and walking along the coast path (with a few steep up and downs!) to Robin Hood's Bay, seeing if we can spot the legendary Boggle of Boggle Hole on the way.
We will then wind our way up through the picturesque but steep village of Robin Hood's Bay to rejoin the coast path and follow this along to Whitby, passing dramatic cliffs and a lighthouse en route. The dolphins joined us at this point on the recce, so keep your eyes peeled! Again there are some ups and downs on this section, though not as bad as those on the first half of the walk.
We will finish at the dramatic Whitby Abbey, most famous for featuring in 'Dracula'. Near the Abbey there are plenty of options for drinks, coffee and ice cream, or those with enough energy left may wish to go into Whitby town centre for fish and chips (though be warned, you will have to climb the 199 steps back up)!
Meeting point: this is a linear walk, so we will meet at the Abbey Headland car park in Whitby at 10am to car shuttle back to Ravenscar to begin the walk. There is some free parking along the road by the allotments next to the car park, so if there are spaces free you may wish to park there. Otherwise parking is £9 for the day, but we will be car shuttling back to Ravenscar so you may want to wait until we know which cars are going to Ravenscar before paying (parking at Ravenscar is free).
Public transport: if you wish to join the walk by public transport you can get the number 5 bus from just outside Scarborough railway station (West Square) at 9:30am which arrives in Ravenscar at 10:19. There is a short walk from the bus stop in Ravenscar to the National Trust cafe where we will begin the walk. If you are coming by bus please let me know beforehand so we know to wait for you at Ravenscar. You can then get the X93 or X94 bus back to Scarborough from Whitby after the walk (please see https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/find-a-service/x93-x94-middlesbrough-to-guisborough,-whitby-and-scarborough for timetables).
Toilets: there are lots of toilet options on this route - there are toilets at Ravenscar before the walk, Boggle Hole, Robin Hood's Bay and in Whitby at the end.
Dogs: dogs are very welcome on the walk, however please be aware there are steep cliff drops at points and some sections cross or walk along quiet roads, so be prepared to put your dog on lead where needed and be aware of your dog's safety.
