This section of the Cleveland Way demands some strenuous effort from the outset, but is certainly not without reward! We begin with a steep ascent up to the Wainstones, an impressive sandstone formation which requires a little scrambling over, and plenty more elevation over Cold Moor, Cringle Moor and Live Moor. We will enjoy the spectacular views across Teeside and over the moors and Dales of the National Park - a real showcase of the dramatic moorland landscape of the Cleveland Hills. Overall, it is a "net downhill" walk, but it won't feel like it until later on! Be prepared for another ascent straight after lunch, but the rest of the afternoon is more forgiving, moving into forest landscape and somewhat gentler terrain. It is all on very well maintained paths, but of course could be slippery when wet, and you may need to bring plenty of water for the strenuous climbs.
🪧 Meet at Osmotherley on the village green (DL6 3AA). We will then take everyone in some cars to the start of the walk at Clay Bank. Please be prepared to give others a lift either to the start of the walk or to take them back to their cars afterwards.
🅿️ On-street parking in Osmotherley – please park with consideration for residents and in accordance with any marked restrictions. Pay & display car park at Clay Bank (TS9 7JA), £5 all day or free for Forestry Commission members.
