Overview

This walk will visit the rarely-visited Garth Hill just north of Cardiff.

Made famous in the film starring Hugh Grant and Tara Fitzgerald, we’ll ascend the hill that became a mountain. Although filmed elsewhere, Garth was the inspiration for the movie!

The mountain was also featured in 2012 on Weatherman Walking, so we’ll be walking in the even more famous footsteps of Derek Brockway!

We’ll start the walk by going through the nature reserve of Coed y Bedw with its ancient woodland.

The walk ascends to the summit of Garth Hill, giving wonderful views across Cardiff and the Bristol Channel, including the two Severn Crossings and north to Bannau Brycheiniog.

N.B. While much of the walk will be of a ‘Moderate’ grading, there’ll be quite a bit of ascent to reach the hilltop which some may find demanding.

The ascent will be in stages and we’ll climb at a gentle pace with stops to catch our breath!  The effort will be worth it for the far-reaching views from the top.
