A linear walk from Colwall to Ledbury following the Geopark Way through fields, orchards and quiet lanes, passing the childhood homes of two famous poets. From Colwall station we make our way to Colwall church with its original Tudor ale house (sadly closed by the local bishop since 1614 amid fears of excessive drinking) before a fairly steep ascent of Oyster Hill offering the reward of fine views on a clear day. From Oyster Hill, we descend through Wellington Heath to arrive eventually in the attractive town centre of Ledbury. Trains permitting, there may be time for refreshment in one of the numerous cafes or pubs before making our way to the station for the return trip to Coventry.
Depart from Coventry station at either 0845 (Tile Hill 0852) or 0906 changing at Birmingham New Street to catch the 0950 Hereford train arriving Colwall at 1052. On return, we expect to catch the 1600 train from Ledbury changing at Birmingham to reach Coventry by 1744 (or 1757 Tile Hill). An earlier return may be possible but can’t be guaranteed.
At time of writing, a full-price day return from Coventry to Ledbury costs £18.90 (£12.55 with a railcard). Holders of a West Midlands Travel Pass may choose to use their card to get to Birmingham and buy a day return from Birmingham to Ledbury (£15.40 or £10.25 with a railcard).
It would also be possible to drive to Colwall, park and meet us at the station, in which case you would need to buy a single ticket for the short return journey from Ledbury to Colwall to get back to your car.
Whilst there’s no requirement to book for this walk, if you let the leader know that you are coming and where you plan to join us, we can look out for you on the station.
