Overview

Join our welcoming and friendly Group for some pleasant, relaxing, easy-paced walk and chat in the attractive scenic countryside above and around the historically significant town of Montgomery (Trefaldwyn). We will be treated to marvellous views of rolling landscapes and rich arable farming land in all directions and wide reaching panoramas of the Shropshire Hills, Welsh Marches and the distant Cambrian Mountain ranges.

The walk will initially pass through the centre of Montgomery (Trefaldwyn) with its medieval street layout, imposing Town Hall and mix of quirky Georgian, Victorian and timber framed buildings. We will also wander by the Castle where we will assess the town's importance and significant role in both the Welsh Independence battles of the 13th century and the English Civil War. After leaving the town and walking up through the verdant pastures above it, we will then circle through to the village of Llandyssil with its collection of historically significant buildings. Our final leg is a visit to the County War Memorial on the summit of Town Hill, a landmark visible for miles around and offering broad far-reaching panoramas of the lands impacted by Conflict and Remembrance.

As we approach this Remembrance Season, we will take some moments on the route to contemplate the impact of conflict on the community. We will look at the headstone of one local lad and consider his story as well as reviewing the role of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission more broadly. We will also pass both the Town and County War Memorials where we can ponder the role of monuments like these in the Remembrance process generally.
