This is a peaceful walk, perfect for autumnal colours.
The Crook O’Lune is a scenic bend in the River Lune just northeast of Lancaster. The walk combines riverside paths, open countryside, woodland and charming hamlets, with views across to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day.
Please note that there are some steep steps and sections that can be muddy. Although there are some climbs the gradient is low overall.
The walk starts at the free car park at Denny Beck Lane, Lancaster LA2 9HQ which is by the old Halton railway station on a disused railway line. We walk approximately a mile down the old railway line, now called Millennium Way, to the Crook O’Lune picnic area where there are public toilets. There is also the opportunity here to buy snacks, including hot and cold drinks and hot breakfast items such as sausage barms etc.
From here we follow the river in open countryside and through woodland. We walk around the full crook before heading uphill to the hamlet of Aughton. From here we head across fields and through woodland to the village of Halton. Whilst in the village, we can take time out for a drink at The Greyhound pub, before crossing the Lune on what was once a toll bridge serving Halton Station. It is now a free to use bridge.
There is a car park on both the left and right as Denny Beck Lane reaches Millennium Way. Take care when parking as both car parks are situated on Millennium Way, which is used by walkers, cyclists and runners. The car park on the right, is in front of the old Halton station building. If you fail to turn into either car park and go straight on you have gone too far. Turn around. Do not go over the bridge!
