Hoping to get away from it all for a few pleasant, peaceful hours in the countryside?!?
Then this is just the walk for you - They don’t come any more ‘rural’ & tranquil than this I guarantee…..!
Starting from the village of Mitchel Troy, we begin by climbing a series of hills. First over Craig-y-Dorth ridge, before descending to Cwmcarfan, then up to Pen-y-Clawdd House, before heading down to Brooks Farm, & thence to The Bourne.
In doing so, we’ll see a lot of sheep for sure, but I’ll be surprised if we encounter another human being! - Lunch will be taken at the nearby “Somerset Arms”.
Thereafter, it’s on to the village of Dingestow, before we pass by lovely “Treowen House”, an impressive & handsome Gr.1 listed Jacobean Manor House - Woodlands then lead us down to & beside the R. Trothy, before we next follow the “Offas Dyke” footpath up & into Kings Wood & it’s trig-point views to Monmouth….
We complete our day by heading on down to Wonastow, then over the A40 & back to Mitchel Troy!
Most all of the footpaths encountered will be new to you, but you can expect it to be both relaxing & taxing by turns - All in all, some 15m. or so, & with about 2,500’ of elevation, or what might be called, ‘a decent days walk….!'
NB - A lot of stiles(!) en route, some of which may leave a little to be desired!
