A second chance to complete this Mountain Fitness walk if you were unable to make the official edition led by Anna last week. We’ll combine elements of the apocryphal route, in order to extend the warmup, with the now more familiar version.
This walk includes several tough, steep ascents and will be conducted at a brisk but not brutal pace. The area famously gets muddy and slippery at this time of year including on a couple of the descents (we will try out an alternative to the notorious ‘chalk pits’ section, but the daring ‘hell slide’ to the Devil’s Dyke remains as usual!). As with all our strenuous walks, this isn’t suitable for first-timers. The challenge is worth it for a great fitness-building day with views from the South Downs ridge.
Ensure you have proper grippy footwear, plus gaiters and poles if you find them helpful. Also bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and snacks. Finally, a headtorch is advisable if you have one, as the final stretch of the walk will likely be in dim light!
Very much depending on pace, we might have time for a pub or outdoor café stop during the afternoon. There are usually one or two toilets open en route but this can’t be promised. Pub stop at the end.
Terrain: fields, hills, paths.
