Overview

Beginning in Merstham and quickly hopping over the bridge to cross the M25, we explore the pretty farmland and countryside on the edge of south London, including passing Upper Gatton Wood and Banstead Wood, the latter of which is likely to have a beautiful floor of bluebells at this time of year.

Following an afternoon pub stop (drinks only), we pass through Oaks Park before entering Carshalton, where we finish with an optional stop at an excellent community-owned pub known for its broad range of ales and traditional ciders.

Please bring a packed lunch.

Travel: Take the 10:54 from London Blackfriars (11:00 London Bridge, 11:17 East Croydon), arrive Merstham at 11:33.

Meet outside the station's Western entrance.

Unusually, Oyster Cards are valid at Merstham Station, but contactless bank cards are not. Alternatively, buy a single to Merstham.

For the return journey from Carshalton Station, Oyster Cards and contactless bank cards are both valid.
