A good but long walk from Moffat starting at the car park at the south of the town just after you cross the bridge. The route initially follows the River Annan through pleasant woodlands along a well used footpath. We are then forced to move away from the river for a section of road walking before we turn off and begin a section of uphill walking. We eventually cross the A701 and skirt around Ericstane Hill before re-crossing the A701 and getting our first good views down into the beef tub. We then continue to climb passing the trig point on Annanhead Hill (478m) before dropping a little as we pass below Peat Knowe and going around the back of Great Hill (466m). Between Peat Knowe and Great Hill the terrain slopes down to the spring that is the source of the Annan. (There is also an optional path descending down the valley). Continuing along the Annandale Way takes us along Chalk Rig Edge (500m) before we reach a monument. We turn sharply here and then begin a steep descent through woodlands. This area has Golden Eagles so, if we are very lucky, we may see one.
We continue our descent until we reach a very quiet road that we follow back towards Moffat. We turn off the road and follow our original riverside path for a bit before turning off, back onto a road and walking through Moffat town centre where optional ice creams are available and you can see the sheep 'wi'nae lugs'. A short walk gets us back to the car park.
