The walk starts at the Cattle Market car park in the village of Wheddon Cross, where the cost will be £5 for parking. The post code is TA24 7DT. Alternatively, there is a smaller car park at the cross-roads in the village, right next to the pub. I believe this one is free, but it is likely to become full quite quickly.
The walk will be initially along woodland paths followed by a climb on a good path to Dunkery Beacon (the highest point on Exmoor). Depending on conditions on the day I may extend the walk by visiting the Rowbarrows, before then walking to Dunkery Beacon from the west. From the Beacon, weather permitting, there will be excellent views all around, including across the Bristol Channel to Wales. We then cross open moorland followed by fields and drop down into the wooded Snowdrop Valley, which is well known for being carpeted in Snowdrops at this time of year. We finish the day by climbing back up through woodland to Wheddon Cross where we can have refreshments either at the Rest and be Thankful pub, or some other nearby establishment.
I have graded the walk as moderate, but if conditions are particularly wet or snowy underfoot then it will become strenuous at times. There is also a steep climb near the end of the walk.
'll be driving to the walk from Exeter and will have spaces for up to three people. If you would like to come on the walk and live in the Exeter area and need a lift, then contact me on
